7. It’s All About Teamwork
“I go to the gym three times a week – as often as I can, really. I work with a fabulous trainer for about an hour each session. We do a lot of cardio and weight training. For me, exercise is more than just physical – it’s therapeutic.” — Michelle Obama
There is no “I” in team. As a team, “we” reach a goal together. Your personal trainer takes joy in seeing you reach your fitness goals. Personal trainers dedicate themselves to helping their cli- ents in this way. Nothing gives them more of a sense of professional fulfillment then seeing their client working tirelessly, following their lead, and getting healthy and fit.
Personal trainers will help you make a difference quickly. They will keep you on track. Their workouts are custom tailored, designed specifically for you to get the maximum results in the shortest period of time. We all know the basic exercises for weight training; the bench press, dumbbell curls, squats, running on the treadmill for cardio, etc. The problem is, doing these standard exercises day in and day out, week in and week out, is like watching re-runs of past TV shows; they are now only mildly entertaining. You have got to shock the muscles and the body. You have to workout differently to get better results. A personal trainer will help you engage the muscles in new, innovative ways. This is what will help you achieve better results faster.

Additionally, a personal trainer can objectively watch your progression and will notice areas where more attention needs to be given. Guys are especially guilty of this. Around early Spring- time, you will find guys at the gym working mostly on their “beach muscles.” They typically work their chest, arms and shoulders. They fail to realize that their abs, back, and legs are underdevel- oped. A personal trainer will make sure you spend time bringing these muscles up to speed so that overall your body looks symmetrical.
8. Make A Lifestyle Change
“Training for me is a metaphor for life, period. The dedication, the determination, the desire, the work ethic, the great successes and the great failures – I take that into life.” — Dwayne Johnson
The elite athletes of the world are constantly striving to get better by working on their game. They focus on their weakness, until those become strengths. They have an incredible work ethic. The same can be said for musicians, singers, and entrepreneurs of all kinds. Their passion for their craft, and their desire to succeed leads to a tireless work ethic.
Exercise and fitness requires is a lifestyle change. After working out over a period of time, your mind undergoes an amazing transformation. Your fitness becomes your passion. Eating the right foods and scheduling time for your workout becomes a priority. That is when you know this new life of yours is here to stay. This is not a passing fad. This has become your life now.
This fitness lifestyle change should also include other physical activities such as bike riding, hiking, swimming, stretching, yoga, and even Pilates. All of these activities build muscle tone and burn fat. An active lifestyle that includes one or more of these activities will help maintain a healthy weight, will assist in keeping the heart healthy, and can aid in warding off diseases like cancer and diabetes. Further advantages include a boost in self-esteem and feelings of self con- fidence. When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, it shows.

An additional benefit to a lifestyle that includes regular physical activities includes an increase in overall muscle strength. Strengthening the muscles helps to protect the joints and bones. This becomes especially beneficial as you get older.
9. Decide To Live Today!
“Scales lie! You lose thirty pounds of muscle and you gain thirty pounds of fat and you weigh the same, right? Take that tape measure out. That won’t lie. Your waistline is your lifeline. It should be the same as it was when you were a young person.” — Jack LaLanne
Jack LaLanne, born Francois Henri LaLanne, was a fitness, exercise, and nutritional expert. He has been called “the godfather of fitness” and the “first fitness superhero”. He pioneered body building and strength conditioning techniques that are still widely used today. Jack published countless books and videos on fitness and nutrition and had the longest running exercise show on TV, “The Jack LaLanne Show”. He invented a number of exercise machines including leg extension and pulley devices commonly used in gyms today. During his lifetime, he received numerous fitness awards. His philosophy was “Living is a pain in the butt. Dying is easy. It’s like an athletic event. You’ve got to train for it. You’ve got to eat right. You’ve got to exercise. Your health account, your bank account, they’re the same thing. The more you put in, the more you can take out. Exercise is king and nutrition is queen: together, you have a kingdom.” Jack LaLanne was so dedicated to his workouts that he exercised, literally, up until the day before he passed away.
As a society, we seem to accept the fact that as we age we get heavier. The truth is we do, but we do not have to. We can maintain a healthy weight throughout our lives. It all has to do with a diet and exercise routine. As you get older, you will need to make adjustments to your workout routine. Even at an advanced age, Jack LaLanne’s workouts always consisted of a weight lifting program. He suggested lifting lighter weights and doing more reps until the muscles fatigued. This was his workout routine until he died in his 90’s. He also encouraged a healthy diet including fruits, veggies, fish (especially salmon), and vitamin supplements. Jack LaLanne died at the age of 96. There is little doubt that his life was greatly extended due to his nutrition and fitness lifestyle.
10. Know Your Body
“I just look at a bagel and my ass gets bigger!” — Jillian Michaels
How well do you know your body? Your body talks to you regularly. It readily tells you what it needs. How well do you listen? There are the obvious things that all of us listen to. For example, when your body tells you it is tired, you go to sleep. When you feel hungry, you get something to eat. When you feel cold, you get warm. Ignoring these messages your body sends you will bring you a lot of discomfort.
Your body talks to you in other ways as well. Physicians agree that exercise is the key to living a longer, healthier life. Without physical exercise, you feel like you have less energy. Your body feels sluggish and heavy. When you do exercise, you feel energized and healthy. Becoming overweight, unless due to a medical problem, is your body telling you that you need to exercise. It is also telling you that your eating habits need to be reevaluated.
Some people have food allergies. Their body is literally telling them, “Do not eat this food”. As a result they avoid those foods entirely. Similarly, if you start gaining too much weight, your body is telling you, “Pay attention to the foods you are eating. Start making better choices.”
As mentioned above, physical exercise brings numerous health benefits. Regular cardiovascular exercise will increase your heart rate. This helps your heart to stay healthy; warding off heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems. Your body is meant to stay active. So include physical activities in your day whenever possible. Take the stairs instead of the escalator at the mall. Mow your own lawn. Put on some comfortable shoes and walk to your friends BBQ in the neighborhood down the street. Do more physical activities and your body will thank you with a longer, healthier life.
